Origins: A Vision Born in 2017
UNIT 1 was founded in 2017 in Argentina, initially focused on designing an innovative ski and snowboard helmet with detachable headphones. Shortly after its launch, the global pandemic brought the ski industry to a standstill as mountains around the world closed.
This challenge became an opportunity. Recognizing the emerging growth in urban mobility—e-scooters, bicycles, and e-bikes—the company pivoted entirely, leveraging its expertise and technology to develop solutions tailored to the needs of city commuters.
A Breakthrough in Smart Helmet Technology
The first product to embody this new vision was FARO, a smart bike helmet featuring integrated lights, advanced sensors, and a seamless blend of technology and design. FARO became an immediate success:
- The helmet secured significant pre-orders upon launch.
- It received multiple industry awards, cementing UNIT 1 as a key player in the mobility technology space.
Following this success, the company—then composed of five team members working remotely across Argentina and Uruguay—relocated its headquarters to Madrid to support further growth and expand its market presence.
Strategic Growth and Global Expansion
Upon establishing its Madrid office, UNIT 1 secured a Series A investment round led by a prominent Dutch fund. This fund is part of a group that owns globally recognized mobility brands, including Veloretti, Kalkhoff, Cannondale, Urban Arrow, and Santa Cruz.
The company has since grown to a team of 15, with six members based in Madrid. The Madrid office serves as the hub for commercial and operational functions, while product and engineering teams remain fully remote.
